Michael Phelps expresss he could use more teaching to make up for lost time to Lochte: Michael Phelps started off the 2011 swim season with mixed results at the Austin Grand Prix over the weekend, claiming two victories over main rival Ryan Lochte but still struggling with his freestyle stroke and finishing third behind Lochte and Eric Shanteau in the 200-meter individual medley Sunday.
Phelps' win in the 100-meter backstroke was his best result of the weekend. He also won the 100-meter butterfly. In addition to the 200 IM, Lochte won the 200-meter freestyle. Phelps didn't qualify for the finals of either the 200 free or the 100 free.
"I'm disappointed," Phelps said. "Obviously, I need more training. We're all just trying to catch up to (Lochte). The level he's swimming at right now is extremely high. But it's good to be here and see how everybody else is doing and how poorly I think I'm doing. This will give me a lot of motivation for the next couple of months."
Said Lochte: "This is a great stepping stone. It's good preparation for what's coming later on. It's a good way to start off the New Year."On the women's side, 15-year-old Missy Franklin added three victories Sunday — in the 200 back, 200 IM and 100 free — to bring her weekend total to five.
