The most decorated Olympian in modern history, Michael Phelps faced teasing as a school-aged boy because of his attention deficit disorder, commonly referred to by its acronym, ADD.
If Phelps had grown up in Hampton Roads, he would have been a candidate for enrollment at Chesapeake Bay Academy.
The Bayside area private school in Virginia Beach that specializes in educating children with learning difficulties.
As it turns out, his mother, Debbie Phelps, is the perfect fit to make a visit to the school.
A middle school principal in Baltimore with more than 30 years experience in education, she will visit Chesapeake Bay Academy.
On Saturday for a luncheon, book signing and speech. She is promoting her book, “A Mother for All Seasons: A Memoir.”
The event kicks off at noon and costs $25 at the door. Mary Morgan, Chesapeake Bay’s curriculum specialist in technology, said landing Debbie Phelps to speak.
At the school resulted from a simple exchange of e-mails among her, Phelps and Phelps’ publicist. Morgan originally planned for Phelps to visit as part of the school’s 20th anniversary celebration in October, but a scheduling conflict pushed her visit to Saturday.
Either way, the school is thrilled to host Phelps, Morgan said. “Her story will be great to share with CBA parents and educators alike. She has had to deal with the challenges of raising a child with ADD and can relate that to education and learning.”
